The photos show Bill Hamilton at Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve (flooded Amazon rainforest), where he loved to work. The boat Gaivota is the boat he used to make his research in the Amazon. He sank this boat once, while working in Mamirauá. All photos were taken during an expedition in October 1996, at Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, in the Amazon Rainforest, near Tefé town, Amazonas State, Brazil. Dr. Hamilton visited this reserve many times to do some research on the evolution of fishes, aquatic plants, etc. I don't know the details of his research there, but William Crampton or Peter Henderson, or Márcio Ayres probably know. Peter Henderson appears in a black T-shirt standing by the the side of Dr. Hamilton in a landscape of sand, where they went to collect microorganisms in water ponds left by the Amazon flood. I don't remember the details. Dr. Hamilton was also interested in plants, so I photographed him examining (collecting) aplant on these "sandscapes". The sand is deposited by the waters of the Amazon (called Solimões in this region) River during the annual floods. Dr. Hamilton (on the boat) was going to these "sandscapes" to collect the microorganisms and on the way back to the Mamirauá lodgings we stopped to visit Mr. Joaquim and drink some coffee with Mr. Joaquim, at Boca do Mamirauá village, a riverside village at the entrance of the Mamirauá channel, that leads to Mamirauá Lake. Mr. Joaquim is a very nice communitary leader of Boca do Mamirauá village (by VILLAGE I mean a dozen houses spread in line in front of Mamirauá Channel).
